While most would assume Cornwall has the surfer’s market nailed down, few consider it a top cycling destination. Yet, the Camel Trail is one of Britain’s most popular cycling routes, thanks in part to it being relatively flat, traffic-free and tarmacked, making it easily accessible. The 17-mile route traces an ex-railway between Wenfordbridge, Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstowe with some fabulous points of interest along the way. It’s a great option for families or anybody wanting something easy on the legs without compromising on scenery (part of the route runs through the Camel Estuary AONB).
If you don’t mind a bit of a bumpier ride, look to the coast for cliff-side trails looking out to sea, such as the Bude Coast & Canal and the Lizard Point circular routes. Parts of the South West Coastal Path are suitable for bikes too like the section between Chapel Porth and St Agnes. The best part? You needn’t worry about finding a parking space at the beach in high season, just pack your flip flops and a few nibbles, chain up the bikes and run straight onto the sand.
The Peak District’s limestone valleys are a mountain biker’s dream with rocky rides and exhilarating descents through the national park’s signature landscapes.
Advanced cyclists can experience it all on the Jacob’s Ladder and Lord’s Seat loop. The 14-mile route will see you gain 2,450 ft in elevation as you pump the pedals up steep inclines on the Mam Tor Bypass and over Hope Valley, before jolting back down via Jacob’s Ladder to finish.
If you’re feeling less daring, various flatter trails pass through top Peak District attractions such as Bakewell and Chatsworth, so you can incorporate some sightseeing and pastry stops into your ride out. There’s also the Tissington Trail, a 13-mile tarmacked route between Buxton and Ashbourne, where we have some gorgeous Derbyshire cottages.
Round off your two-wheeled adventure with a soak in the hot tub back at your pad, overlooking quintessentially English countryside while the jets get to work on sore muscles. Later, fire up the BBQ and enjoy those views with the sun setting or reflect on the day’s highlights inside by a log burning fire.
